Meet Mekea Anderson
Mekea C. Anderson is a Clinical Social Worker/Therapist who is licensed in Maryland and Washington, DC. She completed a master’s degree in Social Work at Howard University with a concentration in Mental Health. Her undergraduate studies were completed at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Rehabilitation Services. Mekea has 20 years of experience working as a social worker in various community settings including public schools, social services, crisis intervention and non-profit agencies. Mekea has been in private practice since 2013 and has worked extensively with individuals dealing with a range of issues including depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief and loss, childhood abuse/neglect, substance abuse, trauma, relational conflict, and employer-related issues (EAP). She has also worked with veterans and active military service members regarding issues related to deployment, relocation, and integration into post-military life.
Mekea’s approach to therapy is to help people facilitate meaningful changes in their lives. She works to establish rapport and build a trusting relationship with her clients. This creates a safe space to discuss life experiences and how to overcome them. Mekea structures therapy sessions based on individual needs and the personal goals each client has using a client centered, strengths-based approach. She specializes in providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, Relationship Enhancement Therapy, Grief Counseling, Anger Management, Conflict Resolution and Crisis Intervention. Examples of therapy goals include learning coping mechanisms, building self-esteem, resolving conflict, managing stress, adjusting to change, or finding resolution to past issues.
Outside of work, spending time with family and friends is important to Mekea. She also makes time to for service and volunteer activities with local civic organizations. Her hobbies include long walks, listening to music, entertaining and craft projects.
